Friendship Day 2023

Bon Accord Bobbins Friendship Day 2023  is on 3rd June this year at Ruthrieston Comunity Centre on Holburn Street, Aberdeen.

All welcome for a day of lace making or just chatting with friends old and new.  Or  if you know someone who is looking for a new craft, bring them along. There will likely be lots of chat , tea and coffee and home bakes.

April 2023.  Bon Accord Bobbins once again gathered in Kemnay for our annual weekend of training with Kitty & Carol. A variety of different laces were attempted or achieved, including Milanese, Idriza, and Flanders and some free lace where the colours of a favourite picture are the inspiration for freely produced lace using colour and texture.  This annual weekend is always popular and is an opportunity to meet up with lacemakers from other groups.

40th Anniversay of Bon Accord Bobbins.

2022 is the 40th Anniversary of the group

The AGM and anniversary lunch was held in the Athol  Hotel. in Aberdeen and was attended by 18 members and previous members of the group.  The group numbers have diminished somewhat but a recruitment drive is planned for next year with demonstrations of lace at various libraries in Aberdeenshire  ( for now) where there are craft groups already in place.

The  picture on the right shows the Bon Accord Bobbins Tablecloth which was made by members many years ago.

Bon Accord bobbins are very sad to announce the death of a founder member.  Lilias Wolkoff learned to make lace while stationed at Bletchley Park.  She was instrumental in starting up Bon Accord Bobbins in 1982 and she continued to attend our weekly meetings until they were suspended in 2020.  She will be sadly missed in the group.

June 2021.

B.A.B. have started meeting again in Ruthrieston Community Centre.  We are socially distanced  and as a consequence the conversation is a bit limited compared to previously but we are enjoying being back together to share stories and experiences of our lace making ( or not_) through the lockdowns.

We are going to continue to meet through the summer. Some members have chosen not to come back until a bit later when hopefully we can return to our more normal format.

Here are some of the things members have been working on during lockdowns or have returned to recently.   >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Feb. 2021   -  It is nearly  a year since Bon Accord Bobbins met in the flesh!   Now with a little light at the end of the tunnel we can look forward to gathering together at Ruthrieston again hopefully  soon.  In the meantime keep those bobbins on the move and keep safe.

May 2020.  - Bon Accord Bobbins are not meeting at the moment and are not planning to do so until after the normal summer break.

However members are finding that the lockdown has created more opportunity to progress or complete whatever lace projects they have started including some rainbows from a pattern sent to us from

Carole Smith.

We are hoping, along with everyone in the country probably, that we will be back in Ruthrieston the middle of August, perhaps with some restrictions still in place but we'll have to wait and see.

Keep safe.

Why not come and join us for our  Friendship day 2018.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

April 7th & 8th 2018

20 ladies from two Aberdeen lace making groups enjoyed a two day course with Kitty Mason and Carole Smith, well known teachers of bobbin lace in Scotland.  The theme this year was Core Skills i.e. starting and finishing in particular.  While some ladies wanted advice and help with a particular piece they were working on, others made bookmarks in Torchon, Bucks Point and Bedfordshire lace in varying degrees of difficulty.

There was a competition to find new uses for a bookmark in the age of Kindles and ebooks.

Needless to say lots of  chat, tea & coffee and home bakes interrupted the lace making.!

9th March 2018

Here is a link to details of an exhibition in Edinburgh during April.  It's an exhibition of lace inspired by machinery organised by the Westhope Group.  Here is the link to the Westhope Group website. https://www.westhopegroup.org.uk/                                                                                                                                                                   >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

21.02.18.  Bon Accord Bobbins members enjoyed a workshop in Macramé with Jahan  our student of last year, who is a gifted  maker of crafts of all kinds.  We attempted owls  and bracelets in macramé .  Progress was a little slow but the finished articles are very effective.

Make a heart for British Heart Foundation.

The group is currently involved in a project to " Make hearts for Valentines Day"   The project is run in conjunction with British Heart foundation and the hearts will be displayed/ sold for Valentines day in Edinburgh BHF shop(s) to raise funds.  Perhaps we can do something similar for BHF in Aberdeen next year?

December 2017

Another year nearly at a close.  Bon Accord Bobbins continues to meet Wednesday mornings at Ruthrieston Community Centre.  Numbers are dwindling a bit unfortunately so any suggestions about increasing membership are welcome.

We did hold a Lace Day this year, but it is now very difficult to get  suppliers to come this far north now and in  fact some suppliers do not travel at all any more.

However, the day went well with visitors from Perth and Edinburgh making the journey.

The Coral theme for Bona Accord Bobbins 35th anniversary inspired a shoal of fish of various kinds , some seaweed and some coral which were all gathered onto a display for the day.

22.09.16 School holidays coming up again  so no group meeting Wed 12th and Wed 19th October.

Also a date for your diary - The AGM and group lunch is on 30th November.

Saturday 3rd September.

In the absence of a Grampian Gathering this year a Friendship Day was held at Ruthrieston.  28 lace makers from up and down the country attended.  Not sure a great deal of lace was being made but there was lots of chat over the pillows and over the tea and home bakes.

Unfortunately  no pictures to share.

More success.

Hannah, one of our young members, finished her studies at Grays Schol of Art and displayed some of her knitted pieces in the degree show. Got a mention in the "Arts" section of the Sunday Herald!

Bon Accord Bobbins is back in full swing.  Friendship Day is imminent  - 3rd Sept.>>>>>>>>

An interesting project which no one had heard of before was brought to our attention today.

A Christening bonnet/wedding hankie.

Here is a link to how to make it and there are some poems to go with it, which will be added in due course.

Event Report.

The Kitty and Carole Course ( 9th & 10th April) was, as always, a huge success. The deceptively simple houses they suggested we do, of course had a twist. We could follow their patterns or introduce our own ideas. A veritable housing estate was being completed by the end of the 2 days with all sorts of colours, stitches and additions - beaded window boxes, door knobs, trailing ivy etc.

Many of us started or continued on, with our own projects under the supportive eye of Kitty and Carole who made the daunting seem less so and even enjoyable!   ( More images in the Gallery.)    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Newsletter. ( April 2016 )

We now have a Facebook page ( see link above)

This is a ‘closed site’ so people will have to be invited or send in a request to join before they can see anything on the site. We hope this will be found by interested parties and bring new members to the club and also gives us another platform by which to share news, photos and reports of events.

We will continue to share news in other ways within the group – letters, word of mouth etc. but this is just an extra way of sharing information.

If you have a Facebook account, to find us, the address is Bon Accord Bobbins Lace Group. Go into Facebook, find us and click on the ‘Join Group’ logo at the right hand bottom corner of the large picture.
